About Darrynane
Darrynane has a long and treasured history. The house and
Lodge were originally built around 1910 by one Walter Sessions, a man
with business interests connected with local china clay mines. He wanted
to be Master of the Hunt so built Darrynane near the hunt Kennels.
At a later time, it became the home of the parents of Rumer Godden of
Black Narcissus fame. She is believed to have written China City here
whilst on holiday from her home in India.
On our arrival we inherited a flock of Soay sheep, descended from the
Queens flock. They are gone now but Darrynane and the surrounding area
abounds with wildlife, from deer to peregrine falcons.
The dawn chorus in spring is absolutely amazing to hear, as are the
owls that abound in the woods during the winter months. We have learned
how to "whistle them in" and many a night is spent counting
the owls surrounding the house.
There are a lot of deer in this locality from little roe deer right
up to red deer. Just recently we have had a small roe deer paying us
regular visits in the garden but when grass and foliage are in abundance
we do not see much of her.
The quarry of course is a nature reserve in its own right with
rabbits, stoats, kestrels, ravens, kingfishers and badgers.
We even have what we are told is a Neolithic cave in the grounds
which could be used as emergency accommodation if needed ... |
